Can anyone advise on how to deal with my property in Malaysia after I renounce the citizenship?

I am a Malaysian and am taking up a foreign citizenship very soon, but do not know how should I handle my house which I have bought 8 years ago after I surrender my Malaysian passport and identity card. How am I going to prove my ownership after that? In addition, what will be the taxes for sale proceed if I managed to sell it one day?

  1. Last time I was in Malaysia (1995) foreigners were not allowed to own property. I think you might have difficulty proving ownership if the law is still the same. I know a few people in Malaysia(foreigners) who bought businesses and property but put it in their Malaysian wives name
  2. It would be wise to sell the property before you give up citizenship. If you are out of the country, it would make sense to appoint an agent to handle the transaction -- except for final signing off on the deal. You need to reserve that chore for yourself after inspecting all of the documents.
