used car title/bill of sale questions!?

first off i know how difficult it's going to be to get a duplicate title.. but... i am about to get one heck of a deal. second, the car isn't stolen.. & third.. this IS possible.. & it seems like a huge waste of $25 but i need one. to avoid calling the dmv and fussing for hours for imformation i was hoping someone could tell me how to go about getting another title for this car.. & does anyone know how.. or where i can get something for them to sign to say that i'm the new owner.. without a decent bill of sale i'm afraid it'll be even more hard to do this. thanks for the advice. the title has only been lost.. personally i don't even know where the title for my current one is..

  1. If the title is in your name, there should be no problem. Just go to the DMV with your ID and an old registration if you have one. If you just bought the car, or it's NOT in your name, then there's trouble. You'll need to find the person who's name it is in, have them get a dupe title made, then sign it over to you. But whatever you do, DO NOT BUY A VEHICLE THAT HAS NO TITLE!!! If you do, the car still isn't yours. All that person has to do is say you stole the car, because you have no proof that you didn't. People try to not sign over titles to avoid paying taxes, then get mad at the DMV because they can't track down the original owner of the car to get the title signed over to them so they can sell the car. It's called title skipping and it's illegal. Make that person get a dupe title first, and sign it over to you BEFORE you buy the car.
