I live in GA. If I buy a used car from out of state private owner and bring it to GA, do I pay GA sales tax?

Public Comments

  1. don't think so...cuz it wasn't bought in GA. You only have to pay taxes for the state it was purchased in.
  2. yes, when you register the car with the DMV to get your license plates you have to pay the sales tax then.
  3. Who pays sales tax for a private purchase?
  4. yes you pay ga state taxes
  5. Yes you do, no one is exempt.
  6. No. In Georgia, you don't pay sales tax when you buy from an individual, regardless of the location of the seller. The state tried a few years ago collecting taxes for sale between individuals, but it didn't work and the law was changed again.
  7. Not only that, make sure you know all the rules on bringing a car from a different state in to yours some times it is more expensive than buying a car in your own state . Ask your local DMV and you have the best advice from the ones they rule.
  8. You will pay for the taxes in that state up front. But when you go register your car to GA, I believe you will have to make up the taxes if the GA tax rate is higher.
