Online House Hunting

Would you hire mobile auto detailing by a college student?

I'm a college student trying to find a way to make extra money to pay for a trip to Europe. I have a summer job working nights so my mornings are free. I am considering doing auto detailing and would like some feedback. I am considering this because people always tell me how nice and clean my car is because every week or so I spend 3-4 hours cleaning it. It could be mobile (I come to your house and clean your car in your driveway) which seems the easiest, unless people allow me to bring their car to my house but that presents problems with liability if anything should happen to the vehicle. I would do a wash, wax, and interior cleaning. Clean and wax the door jams, trunk, hood, rims, and tires. Vacuum the interior, clean the dashboard and door panels. For pricing I have researched and found doing a by the hour rate is better than a flat rate because it can depend on how dirty the vehicle is, the size, and what people want done. I was considering $40 for the first hour and $10 per hour after that. Retail businesses can charge well over $100 dollars or even $200 so I want to keep my prices low. I was thinking of distributing fliers to local businesses and possibly sending mail fliers around the community. What do you think? Would you consider hiring a college student to do this for you? If you have any other business ideas that would be appreciated. Do you think this is a good idea? Also, name ideas? One suggestion I got was "Primp My Ride"

  1. I like the idea...I'd use it. If you have any money (or wish to barter) talk to your local radio station.
  2. I would definately say yes, especially for that price. Shame i'm in England. You should do it, and the only reason why other companies charge more, is they are profiteering. So, you should do it at the price you stated and welcome the calls. Could even take over your night job.
  3. We have used a similar service to have our vehicle washed and cleaned. One thing I would recommend is to be able to give a firm estimate before you start so there are no surprises for the owner. My second recommendation is to schedule the next detailing when you finish the current one. We had a standing appointment every three weeks. It worked out very nicely. Good Luck!
