have a York Diamond 80 heater-how do you get the heater to turn on when it's 90 degree outside- house sale

Heater worked fine in March, had house inspected for sale and the inspector says he can't get the furnace to work I say that's because it's 90 plus outside. HELP

  1. The thermostat will need to be removed and a short (2") piece of wire can have its ends stripped to bare wire and formed into a U-shape. Touch one end to the screw holding the wire labeled "R" and the other end to the screw holding the wire marked "w" and this should by-pass the thermostat and make the furnace work. Change Inspectors too if you can. LOL!
  2. I believe this is a gas unit. See if the pilot-light is still on. If the gas has been turned off, then the pilot light is probably off and would need to be re-lit. Pilot lights have "thermo-couple" devices which produce a small current when the pilot light is on, allowing the gas to be turned on to the burner when the thermostat clicks on. The wind can blow them out as well because the cabinet it's in is vented to the outside and the exhaust pipe out the roof will suck air up when it's windy. I've seen this happen. Elsewise, find out the manufacturer of the THERMOSTAT, have its model # in hand and call their 800 phone number and ask how to bypass it. It has a number of leads which are color-coded and are low voltage. Do your test in the evening after the house cools off. Most inspectors are in a hurry and they won't ACTUALLY inspect the unit. Also, if it's a home inspector, they look for things to help draw down the price for their clients and can be quite unreasonable. We usually leave a couple small things for them to find so they won't dig too deep. Tricks of the trade.
  3. Home inspectors are such knuckleheads!! The t-stat doesn't care what the temp is outside!! As long as the inside temp is below the max temp of the t-stat, the furnace should kick on, unless the knucklehead didn't get the blower door back on properly when he checked the filters. Otherwise, don't waste your time looking for a pilot either, because there isn't one. Check the obvious: Door switch; SSU switch: Gas shut-off or gas valve is shut off.
