Can I claim house rent allowance for full year if I worked for 8 months?

I lost my previous job in Aug 2009 and found a new job after a gap of 4 months. Although I had a gap in employment, my HRA from April 2009 to Mar 2010 would exceed the house rent for that duration. Can I claim HRA exemption for the full year or it can be claimed only for the duration I was employed?

4. You can claim HRA if you have an HRA allowance as part of your salary package. If you had salary for 8 months then you can claim for 8 months' allowance only. HMT
