One last question about my puppy. Please help! ITS URGENT!?
I found an ad on kijiji, it was this lady selling chihuahua's. I was going to get one from a Rescue or something but I looked and couldn't find the puppy for me... I saw a picture of 1 of the 3 dogs she had left for sale and I fell in love with her! I went to her house a few days later. (like a 2 hour drive!) And bought my puppy. I asked the lady if my puppy had her first shots or second shots or anything? She is almost 4 months. (4 months on the 20th of this month) Anyways... She told me that she buy's the shots and medicine herself at some feed store and gives the puppies the shots HERSELF! (She said because she has a lot of puppies at once it gets expensive to take them all to the vet for their shots) She also said she used to work at a Shelter and gave dogs shots before so she knows what she's doing and she said she never had any problems. But she seemed really shady... She lived in the ghetto in like a trailer park with dirt for a front yard and no back yard. My mom and I drove down this dirt road and she was standing outside her gate. I met her at the gate and behind the gate was her dirt front yard and her trailer park house. Also she had like 6 dogs running around on the dirt front yard. She went in her house and brought me my dog and she brought 2 other Chi's out. She said there were 3 more inside of hers and like 6 puppies or so in the house. And she said there were more dogs around on the side of the house. So she did not seem trustworthy at all. But when I saw the puppy I fell even more in love with her! And I would especially want to take her and give her a WAY better home! The lady also told me that she bathed all the puppies once a week! I don't think thats good for puppies... Anyways, so she gave my puppy (and the others) their shots herself. Is that okay? If I went to my vet and he checked her out and said everything is fine then would it hurt her to get the same shots all over again? Just to make sure? I'm really worried that she didn't get the shots or that its not safe what she did. Thanks for reading all that and thank you for any help. Oh and she told me that one of the puppies has a bad leg... Like its all gimpy and broken or something. Thats the reason she's keeping that one. She just seemed really shady. Not trusting AT all No, she gave me No shot record. And she never took the puppies to the vet. What is BYB? Oh and she doesn't even have a breeders license.

- Sweetie - can I ask you why you even supported a breeder like this? I understand that you fell in love with the pup, but you've just given this 'person' reason to breed again! You never "save" pups from BYB's - you only fuel the fire. What's done is done. Without any sort of documentation on the vaccinations, you have to assume that they haven't been done. A BYB/puppy mill like this probably did not get them done anyway. Call your vet to see what you should do for vaccinations since there are no records and the person was so shady. And you may want to report this person to Animal Control. Added: A BackYard Breeder. A small scale puppy mill. They breed their pets - generally dogs that are not breeding quality. http://www.pbrc.net/breeding3.html can help you learn more (it's not a gross out site, just a chart).
- There are some experienced breeders and pet owners that administer the shots themselves. Some steer clear of doing this and leave it up to the veterinarian, as I do. However, from the sound of things, she is not trustworthy. Did she give you any evidence regarding the shots that she administered? I highly doubt she was experienced enough to perform these shots herself. It's also a red flag that she brought the pups out rather than allowing you inside the home. I always allowed people inside my home. Either she is a backyard breeder or a puppy mill, and will DEFINITELY mislead someone into believing the pup received what was necessary when in actuality, they have not. Did the pup have a thorough health check before you purchased her? Take her to the vet and get her an examination. I would also contact animal control and file a complaint regarding the conditions of her home. They are BOUND to find something that is unsuitable. Edit: A BYB is a backyard breeder. Someone that cuts all corners possible with vet care, shots, health records, health guarantees, genetic testing, etc. Their whole point is to make money. They couldn't care less about the breeding stock, nor the puppies. Only the money that they produce. If she did not give you any shot records, then I would contact a trustworthy vet and ask what you should do in that situation. At least Parvo vaccinations should be done. These are pretty important and should have been started at approximately 2 weeks of age, every 2 weeks, until 16 weeks of age. The booster is also necessary. Do not allow a vet to over-vaccinate. Over-vaccination can cause immune system problems. You can do a bit of research on this. Many pet owners have now opted out of some vaccinations as over-vaccination has been known to cause problems. Fully research it before you make that decision however. As for being a registered breeder, I suggest contacting animal control. They will go out and look at her property. If it is unsuitable, they should give her a certain amount of time to fix the situation, and sometimes a citation. If she does not comply, then the dogs are removed from the location. Another edit: A gimpy leg doesn't necessarily mean it's a broken leg, however only a vet could determine that. If she didn't have the pup seen by a vet, she is even more irresponsible than she was before. She should be reported asap.
- Well, in my opinion of what i have learnt about dogs : Bathe once in 2 weeks Get shots from the vet. the vet is certified Walk them 3 times a day Give food 2 times a day Take care and Love them A dog is a mans best friend Hope this helps .... * i answered your before qs. too *
- i wouldn't get the shots again because you don't want to hurt the dog. you should really talk to vet about getting the shots again. it was really wrong wat she did and i think its illegal
- i'm sorry i can't answer you.. but i wanted to say that it was really good of you to take a puppy away from that type of enviroment..
- Tell your authorities Straight away, she has to be stopped putting Innocent puppies at risk. Tell them everything and they will act to stop her. Your pup need you to be honest to the vet, tell him everything you know and he will advise you what is best, with what you say a full health check and screening via bloods is probably on the cards for your little pup but look at it this way yours is probably one of the luck ones. it has you!. You wont lose your pup but the old lady will be closed down and the remaining pups will be found good new homes via the rescue. She will be fined for treating pups without a vets license. Act now!
- call the rspca
- Well if you are nervous, (I am) so you should go to the vet and get your puppy checked out. Just to make sure everything is ok. For some shots it is alright to give more then once, (but not to much) they are like humans doing drugs, you know? I would ask your vet what his or her opinion is, and just make sure you have a healthy puppy. Other then that is it an active puppy and everything looks fine? I would still go to the vet and make sure. :) Hope everything is fine with the pup and congratulations on getting it :)
- I do give my dogs the shots myself. If she is doing this she needs either a APL (Animal Pharmaceuticals License) or a Vet's license. If she can't provide either, she's lying. Also, depending on the state, they require a record of shots for animals that need registrations (ie pets, dogs, cats, etc.), so she should have handed you that paperwork at the time. This sounds to me like she is just telling you this so you will buy the dog so she can buy crack. Get the shots for your dog from a real vet: it could save their lives!
- I would tell the authorities. Hopefully the rest of the animals can be taken away from her. It's one thing to administer shots yourself, but it's sketchy for a breeder to give no records of the shots, etc. I doubt the parents were titled or health tested, too :( What is a backyard breeder? http://www.almosthomerescue.org/whatisbyb/whatisbyb.htm Backyard Breeder vs Reputable Breeder: http://www.jlhweb.net/Boxermap/reputablebreeder.html/
- Giving the shots herself is normal and really no big deal. As long as she did give them. If you don't trust her, how do you know she even gave the shots? She's due for a Rabies shot. Spring for a 6 in 1 while you're at the vet. About everything else, well, what are you gonna do? Take the puppy back? NO! You're in love. Relax. Enjoy the dog. Pick a better breeder in the future.
- Best to visit a vet and have the chi checked up. Since you said yourself she's shady, then by all means don't trust what she said. She must be telling these things about administering the shot herself because she's luring you into buying the chi, nothing major. Get an expert help regarding your pup if you must.
- Looks like u have all the answers u need, just wanted to say im glad u got the dog out of there. I got my dog(australian cattle dog) from a similar set up on a farm. Ive had him 11years now & he is my best mate.Hope u get as much happiness from ur pup as i have. Enjoy.....
- take your puppy to the vet ASAP to get shots redone. ask where- and i mean exactly where she got the vaccs, and go check out the store yourself- was it a 5 way, 7 way? it is okay to vacc your dog at home BUT trust the place you bought the vacc's, make sure they are good and done correctly- don't trust all feed stores that their vaccs are good. if you want to do it yourself- buy the vacc from the vet yourself. why? my dog sadie was self vaccinated at home, 2 by me, one by my friend i got her from... she got parvo at five months- i caught it early got her in to the doc, the vet thinks at least one of the vaccs i gave her was bad. i'm a nursing student i know how to give shots, my friend is a nurse... they were administered correctly. the area i lived in in oregon has a very, very high incidence of parvo- she probably got it in my own backyard yes, she lived, i treated her at home, over a grand later and week off work she made it, i ran sub-q fluids on her and the whole sha-bang. with a dog of your pups size, the pup would more than likely not beat parvo... my girl is an amstaff mix she has had a whole new series of vaccs- from my vet- and is doing great at currently 1.5 years old... but don't trust this...
- This woman is a backyard breeder. These are people who care nothing for their dogs and only breed them for profit. Unfortunately, you bought one of her pups, putting money in her pocket and condoning her practices. Yes, people can give shots themselves. However, ONLY a licensed vet can give a rabies shot. You MUST have this done at a vet. She cannot buy this vaccine anywhere unless she is a vet. Please, never ever do this again. NEVER buy a pup from anyone unless they are a REPUTABLE breeder. Make sure the parents have had their hips xrays, eyes checked, etc. If you don't want to get from a REAL breeder, then RESCUE. It is really the only way to go. There are so many chihuahas out there that need rescue. I don't understand how you weren't able to find one. Please take your pup to real vet and at least get a rabies shot. Also, get a microchip inserted as well as make sure your dog has tags on its collar at all times. I would go to this person's house and picket outside so no one else buys from her. SHAME ON YOU.
