Online House Hunting

What are the ramifications of having a party in a house that is for sale?

There's a house near my friends that has been up for sale for a very long time (more than a year). We were thinking of throwing a small party in the basement of the house. We were going to black out the windows with sheets and stuff as to not let light from inside be visible from the street. What are the legal ramifications of this and do you think we can get away with it? I would appreciate legitimate answers and not people bashing me. Also do houses for sale have the electricity and power on still?

  1. Breaking and entering and criminal trespassing are your biggest leagal problems there, and yes you can get jail time for both. Empty house (especially for that long) don't usually have electricity, or power of any kind on...so no water...how would you use the restroom? Send your guests ouside? Jail and unhappy guests, it doesn't sound worth it to me.. I hope you choose not to do this.
  2. Unless you know the person who owns the house and they give you full permission it is not okay. Also how would you even get in the house in the first place???? And yes homes for sale usually still have electricity, but if no lights have been run for months the owners might see a small change in their electric bill if you run a lot of lights. It is not a good idea at all to do this.
  3. Be prepared to have to cops come and bust up the party. It happened where I lived and the neighbors called the police they came with hound dogs even. There were about 30 or more kids and they were all put outside to sit on the lawn and they called everyones parents. I can say many were upset about it. And as parent if there is a house for sale and I find out a party is going to take place you better believe I am calling the police. Cause anything could happen in there. Fires, Fights getting outta hand. Under age Drinking. Anything is possible.....That party never got started and was good cause they found that one of the kids was carrying a gun. So just know if the owner finds out when the cops come "they" the "owners" can press charges also for tresspassing. And also for breaking in and entering without the owners consent.
