Online House Hunting

What is the one thing that puts you off renting or buying a house?

When you go house hunting, be it to rent or buy, what is the one thing about the house and/or yard that makes you say, "we don't want to live here?" It could be a flat, duplex or any other type of housing too.

Public Comments

  1. the appearance of the next door houses
  2. Location, location, location.
  3. I usually look at cupboard space in the kitchen and bedrooms as my primary concern, also the roof, it must be a tiled roof and the house should preferably be face brick, I don't want the hassle of painting walls etc every second year. In the garden I don't mind as I would enjoy developing that myself but the surrounding walls must be at least 6 to 7 feet high, I don't want nosy neighbours staring into my house. Major turn offs are, fluffy carpets, built in ceiling lights and low ceilings.
  4. a bad neighbour hood and unhygene surroundings
  5. i had no choice to live here as the flat iwas living in before was chuckingus out! only had a month to find somewere new! and that was over xmas :( . after i got here, i noticed how much i hated it! at the time i was just happy to find a place! 1. the only thing you can see out of the windows is strait in to someone elses house! 2. it has no garden, just a horrible old garage and horrible concreate. 3.the area is rough! overall i just HATE it! thankfully my contract is up in november and im going to move back to the area i grew up !:) houses are smaller and more expencive but if it means goin down the shop and not gettin harrased by 12 year olds to buy them vodka and fags then im happy! lol i also have a child to think about! i want a garden for him to play, near the good schools and polite children!:) .what about you? x
  6. bad location no garden bad smells
  7. The area, the neighbours and the noise.
  8. Location is number one for me, i.e. the look of the neighbourhood (as they say rather buy an ordinary house in a good neighbourhood than a fancy house in a bad neighbourhood) Buying a house is a major investment, so you can't afford to get it wrong. "In need of refurbishment" makes me nervous Dog poo in the yard puts me off, I just can't see past it!
  9. It is better to have the worst house in a good neighborhood than the best house in a bad one. Location is the only factor.
  10. The location and the garden. I love garden's where I can plant flowers, herbs e.t.c. Not when it's all slabbed. If the area is bad there really isn't any point in moving there as you will always be concerned about your things getting stolen.
  11. How close is my neighbour's Is there some one living on top How big is the place in terms with the monthly payment - is it worthwhile Is there a decent garden ( we have a dog) How will taffic be Safety
  12. I look pass many things, kitchens can be redone, gardens, bath room, cupboards too. The main thing is the location. Rather buy a dump in a good area than a mansion in a slum. The dump you can still fix up and then make your money. One thing I do ask is a Borer Beetle Certificate at the coast, as well as a roofing certificate. To replace a roof is very expensive.
  13. Bad condition of kitchen and bathroom when renting. Neighbourhood when buying..
  14. The shower!
  15. The fact that one day somebody might take it away from me. That sort of thing can happen where I live.
  16. I need light to work by, natural light. I will never buy or rent a place that faces South and that is dark and cold.
  17. not enough closet space or room
  18. A dirty place. I bought a new townhouse. It's awesome!
  19. Having neighbours like KFC!!
  20. set set set why now man
  21. The owner and neighbors ,dirt I can clean,,, paint I can put....garden I can fix but owner and neighbors ! can't fix that
  22. No view. No space for me and animals
  23. Need windows. I like good solid air flow in the place. I look at dirt. If its really cleanable??? Thats the basics. Other things are dependant on my need
  24. If the neighbours are black.
