  1. In the Air Force, you can usually take it once you get to your base. In the US, you'll get up to 9 days, and overseas you'll get up to 20. Also, if you are staying in overseas TLF for more than 2 weeks while in processing, you must prove that you've looked at at least 1 house a week to remain in TLF.
  2. You can house hunt after you arrive at your new duty station. When you arrive at your new duty station (and you sign in) ask your new Commander for Permissive TDY time for House Hunting.
  3. well usually your supposed to get 10 days tdy ( army ) but i dunno if that goes from the old one or the new one... the last move my husband got screwed out of taking any time off.... it sucked but oh well ....
  4. Can't speak for any other branch of the service, but in the Air Force you can do either one. It all depends on your commander at your losing unit and the commander at your gaining unit. They both are the final authority to determine whether you will be granted permissive TDY, but from my experience the commanders almost always grant requests for permissive TDY for house hunting. My advice is to try to take your permissive TDY at your new duty station -- it's so much easier than trying to do it before you actually PCS...
  5. You get 10 days TDY (guaranteed) when you get to your NEW duty station....if you take leave from your old place....its taking your own leave...not house hunting leave....Most places make you inprocess first and you MUST GO to housing office.and get on the waitlist...if there is one...if theres not youll probably be stuck on base housing...but you still get your 10 days...(once you find a place,if your on the waitlist...you go to housing and show them your lease and have them remove you from the waitlist..) and then when your done with that couple days....you get your TDY,to look for an apartment or whatever...at least thats how it works in the army stateside....
  6. We are in the Navy and we always take house hunting leave a few months prior to checking out of the old command. This is to set up an address with the TMO as to where to deliver our HH goods to. Where will you stay just before checking in to the new command? It's best to have it all set up 1st so you arrive in your new town with a place to live already. Finding a place to live within 10 days while needing to move in ASAP can sometimes be difficult. How do you know that there will be an apartment/house that suits your needs that is available right then? Good luck!
  7. command discretion. some will cut you lose once you have signed in, others make you suck it up.
  8. Either way you choose. And whether you take it before you leave or after you report, it's NOT counted against your regular leave balance. You will actually be written Permissive TAD (Temporary Additional Duty) Orders that you will have to have stamped by the housing office at your new duty station location in order to validate. That being said, if you choose to take the house-hunting before you leave your current duty station, you'll have to pay for any and all expenses getting to and from the new duty station (read: No Per Diem) ;-). Another note that a lot of people get mixed up about is the timeframe for house hunting. True, it is up to 10 calendar days... but only FIVE working days can be missed. So where the 10 days comes to play is if you leave on a Friday after your normal duty hours, spend the whole weekend (S/S - 2 days), the next work week (M-F - 5 days) and the next weekend including a Monday holiday (S/S/M - 3 days) and report back to work on Tues. morning. That's the only way house hunting can last 10 days. Hope that helps. Good luck on the move!
