In Austin Texas, what are the good areas to go house hunting?
North, South, Central, East? What are the good & bad areas of Austin? Thanks :)

- with the weather out there I would make sure that the house is not on a flood plane
- East of I-35 is the bad part of town. Terry town is a very nice area, but also very expensive.
- As a local REALTOR, I can't necessarily tell you where bad areas of town are. I have a lot of investors for example that love house hunting east of I35. Tarrytown is nice, but really it all depends on what you are looking for. Peace & Quiet like a Rural Environment? Then possibly Dripping Springs, Bastrop, Hutto, or Lago Vista. Suburbian type of homes, then Round Rock, Pflugerville, Cedar Park, Leander, South Austin, Northwest Austin, or Lakeway. Trendy Urban environment? Then Tarrytown, Allandale, Enfield, or Travis Heights. Then again, all of this also is contingent upon price range you are looking for. For safety, Round Rock has recently been voted one of the safest cities in America. Not to tout my own profession too strongly, but hiring a Buyer's Agent doesn't cost you the buyer anything extra. I would go with a qualified local professional, but OBVIOUSLY, I'm prejudice! On an opinion level, having lived in many other cities, I've been pleasantly surprised by how safe and "good" most of the Austin area is. Compared to some other places I lived, Austin doesn't even have a "ghetto" even though long time locals would disagree.
