i've been giving 2 weeks to move out of my house by the owner. is this legal? i'm in calif. been living in this house for about 3 years. it was an agreement between the owner and i to deduct any repairs that i do to the house off from my rent. also i was working for him with the same agreement. when rent was due, he refused to do any of the deductions, and demanded his rent. so i refused to pay him the rent money. it is now 2 1/2 years later. i still have not gave him any rent money, so basically he agreed to let me live in the house rent free. now, all of a sudden, he says to me that i have 2 weeks to move. i am not prepaired financially to move at this time. can he evict me just like that? please help!

We're buying a house and need to move very soon, could we rent the new place from the owner before we buy it? I'm having a baby due September 1st, and we're moving to a new town and I want my daughter to be at school for the start of the new school term too... Although we've had an offer accepted on a house, and the owner is moving to rented accomodation (so there's no chain), we're concerned that legal things are so slow that we might not be in the new property before September... Does anyone know of any pros/cons in offering to rent the house we're buying from the owner until the house is legally owned by us? where would i report an owner trying to rent out a house with mold? I went to look at a house for rent today and when I called the number and the owner told me he was getting ready to paint it and it was open, just to walk in. I go into the first bedroom and there is mold all along the baseboards and cracks of the walls. He is obviously going to try painting over this before anyone notices and he didn't inform me of it so I'm assuming he is going to hide it. Also, my husband and I walk out and had FLEAS all over us. looking to rent a house - how risky is this? Can new landlord charge rent to 81-yr-old existing tenant given lifelong rent-free tenancy by previous owner? My 81 year old mother in South Dakota moved from her farm home into an apartment owned by a man who owed her a large amount of money he was unable to pay to her. This man told her she could live in the apartment rent-free for life. The farm home is no longer liveable. The original apartment owner lost the apartment house due to back taxes and it has now been purchased. The new owner says my mother must start paying $400. a month rent beginning the end of this month. The letter and phone message stating this were around the 20th of the month. What rights does my mother have in this situation? Is she entitled to 30 day notice of the rent increase or can they just tell her she has to start paying it? New owner says he has right to enter home at any time with no notice given. Is this true?
Have new owners to my rental house in LA. They want to raise the rent by 35% + utilities. What do I do? I think the max allowable increase for rent in LA is 4% due to rent control not 35% and I was given less than 30 days notice. I don't think this is legal, but I don't know what to do? 3 day notice to pay rent of quit..new owner demanding rent for June..? To sum up without great detail, we have a 2 year lease with our former owner. She lost the home to foreclosure and it was sold at auction to a new buyer 3 weeks ago. A broker representing this owner (who is someone who buys houses, fixes them up and resells them..) told us we needed to leave but I told her I have rights. I know they want us out but I have a right to finish my lease time. So I provided her a copy of the lease and since I had already paid June's rent to the previous landlord I told her that I would not pay two rents for June. She did not contact me for a few days then the other day stuck a 3 day notice to my door while I was out of town and told me to pay for June's rent or get out. My question is this: My lease still says the name of the former landlord. Are the new owners required to write me a new lease since technically the information included on my lease is now no longer valid. (eg. Landlord name, address, etc..) I do not feel comfortable turning ANY money over to someone that I do not technically have an actual lease with..what to do? Also, my lease states that pool and water and yardwork is paid by owner but this past month I had to pay it myself since the new owner did not transfer anything yet..can I request to take that off? btw, I have been here almost a year and the owner did not default before I had been here several months..

Until... our power stopped working in our house. Also our stoves and even our water doesn't turn hot.... so my fiance and I have had to go to our local community centre to use the showers there.... this is absolutely humiliating!!! We pay 1000$ a month for rent in a house and can't even live in it. Our Landlord is demanding we pay the full rent... but this is absurd!!! We have had 3 weeks and no power... how is this considered habitable? The Landlord does not own the house, he simply re-rents it. The owner of the house refuses to fix the hydro saying it is the Landlords job, but this is an internal problem with the electrical and needs to be looked at by the owner... simple as that! Our Landlord is saying he wants the other 500$ rent even though we can't live in our own house.... we think the first $500 was GENEROUS... we should have had to pay NOTHING! Our food and many other things have been ruined due to this, and not only is he JUST asking for the other $500 but he is also asking us to "pitch an extra $500 for help.... here is the direct quote from an email I got from him "just letting you know i hope you get... the deposit in my acct today, it IS quite urgent for me at this time and if any way possible , an extra 500 , that you mentioned in previous conversation, would be a godsend for me at this time" Don't get me wrong, I know he is going through a hard time.... but this is NOT my responsibility.... I refuse to pay the other $500 until my house is livable! I even pulled up the residential tenancy act and is states clearly in black and white: Landlord and tenant obligations to repair and maintain 32 (1) A landlord must provide and maintain residential property in a state of decoration and repair that (a) complies with the health, safety and housing standards required by law, and (b) having regard to the age, character and location of the rental unit, makes it suitable for occupation by a tenant. (2) A tenant must maintain reasonable health, cleanliness and sanitary standards throughout the rental unit and the other residential property to which the tenant has access. (3) A tenant of a rental unit must repair damage to the rental unit or common areas that is caused by the actions or neglect of the tenant or a person permitted on the residential property by the tenant. (4) A tenant is not required to make repairs for reasonable wear and tear. (5) A landlord's obligations under subsection (1) (a) apply whether or not a tenant knew of a breach by the landlord of that subsection at the time of entering into the tenancy agreement. He also said he does NOT want to take legal action, but if he is expecting me to pay a penny legal action should be taken..... Someone told me that I am in the wrong by with holding the rent.... but the damage was done BEFORE I with held ANY rent money.... Am I really in the wrong? I think he is in the wrong, and I should NOT have to move, I quite enjoy my home.... I just want it fixed!!! Please help ANY advice?!

My house owner is a serious bitch.? We live in Southwest Chicago. Everything started in winter. Everyone noticed that this winter was the coldest one since a long time. It was totally freezing. He set up a temp. like 72 F degrees. It was like that the entire winter. Besides that he kept changing temp. whenever was ONE warmer day.He didn't care that the following days were freezing (20 degrees). When it was getting warmer in February and March he kept turning off the heat because when we open a window the heat is turning on so he loses money. It's totally not a truth. You would have to keep the windows open the entire day to get the heat on because he set up that kind of temp. Nothing happens when you open the window for 10 minutes so the house doesn't stink after cooking even though we don't use tons of garlic or onion. There is nothing worse than a stinky house where the windows weren't open for a long, long time. I visited the places like that. You would never tell from the outside that there is a stinky disaster inside. The other problem was that there were two guys downstairs who smoke the cigarettes inside their bedrooms so the awful smell was getting to us through the ventilation. We had to close them, put the paper and tape on the airing holes and still we could smell the alcohol and the cigarettes. It was so nasty. Next day my mother screamed on them and since then they couldn't smoke inside a house. Nobody smokes in my family so why would we pay the rent and smell the cigarettes? When the guys weren't paying the rent the owner was so nice to them and kept telling: "Please, pay at least a part of it". And then he tried to raise up our rent. We refused because we know that the utility payments didn't get higher in this area. We can't change the temp. because that thing is inside a plastic cage. The owner turned off the heat before the April 15. It was too cold. Right now there is 66 degrees inside the house. There is like 58 outside. Tomorrow is going to be twice as cold (don't forget aboout our famous cold wind which is so annoying). I have my warmest hoodie one (the one withe fake thick "fur" inside), long pants, and socks on my feet. I'm warming up myself with a cup of hot tea. And when I'm spending 7 hours in college I'm always so hot. I don't need any sweaters, only the short-sleeve t-shirt. The other students have their sweater on them and say that it's cold.Today I was leaving my car and he was leaving his car. I told him "Hello" and he asked if I know what will be the weather tomorrow. I was like completely confused but I told him: "Yeah, it'll be colder than today". And he said:"You better save the warm and don't open any windows, you know! Because tomorrow you're gonna yell that you're cold!" I was completely shocked. Am I a slaver so he's checking whether I have windows open or closed!? Well, I always open my windows when there is a warmest moment of the day during a spring for a half an hour when there is a smell (even though we all take the showers every day and wash our clothes often) or we were cooking. I know that if I won't do that everything will stink especially because the guy who lives downstairs isn't very clean. My question is if there would suddenly 10 degrees the owner doesn't have to turn the heat on? It's so stupid. I never met anyone who has the heat locked up even though they also rent the house or condominium. If we could we would buy a house but right know it's impossible. We don't want to move every year. We always have the owners who have nothing to do but coming every day to the garage (which is not rented by us) and checking if we don't use too much water, gas, or electricity. The cold water is free in Chicago. The bills aren't high. But the owners would most likely want to take the money from us (we pay regularly on time) and don't allow us to use even a glass of water and turn the light on for more than five minutes! Do you have any advices so we won't have the problems with the owners or it's just our bad luck?

The owner of the house I live in owes the city thousands in fines and, and has several violations against the building. The property has gone into receivership with the city of Buffalo. I have no idea what's going on. I was told the owner no longer has control of the property.
