house hunting...? I am looking for a house to rent. What type of questions should I ask the landlord about the house I am interested in?
What is the best season to go house hunting? I am looking for a house to rent and am having an argument as to when is the best time to look for a house. He says it's in the spring because then we wont have to move in the snowy cold , Canadian, winter. I say it's better to move in the winter because then we can see how he insulation is in the house and how much heat it does or doesn't let out. (our present place has very bad insulation and is covered in ice.) Any ideas?
If you were house hunting and the seller had an inflated idea of what his home was worth, what would you do? Seller says the house was appraised by his bank in May at 170k. Let's just forget about the fact that a LOT has happened to the real estate market since May - just for a minute. He's trying to pass off a 2 bedroom house as a 4 bedroom, because there are 2 rooms in the basement that he's considering bedrooms although without closets. The house needs major work in the kitchen and bathrooms, costing at least 50k if the work was done ourselves. He's living in la la land, I think. Oh, there are no comps - nothing has sold in the area over the last year & nothing else is on the market. He's making a lot of stretches (other than just the bedroom thing) to claim added value. You could fit 2 mini cooper's maybe, but not 2 normal sized cars. The 2nd full bath's shower could fit a midget, but not an average person - it's completely unusable. They're asking (in my opinion) 25k more than it's worth, but won't reconsider. We're walking away. Is this the right thing to do? Other houses of similar size with similar features are selling for as much as 50k less, I think one of them will be best -considering they need the same amount of work as this house. There's nothing remarkable about this house, it's just close to work - but so are lots of others. This seller is just way out in left field.
Tips for house hunting in a hot market? I'm currently looking to buy a house in the very hot market where I live. In this market, bidding wars are pretty common...you finally find your dream house and lose out on it because someone that can pay more than you. Any advice on keeping your sanity? Any general advice?
house hunting etiquette? What to say or not say to the realtor? My friends are looking for a condo or townhouse, and originally my friend asked me to help her, by looking online to see what is available. So we saw some places she was interested in going to see, contacted a realtor, and we went and looked at some condos, me included. We went and saw two condos yesterday, one was a repo, and needed a lot of work, and as I was walking around, I kept saying that if I were to buy it, this is what I would redo, this is what I like and don't like about the place, just giving my honest opinion. Apparently after I left, my friend's husband said he was offended by what I said, and the realtor said she didn't want me around when they looked. My friend left me a message saying that I should have kept my opinions to myself. Why? If you don't say how you feel, how are they going to know what you like or don't like? She asked me to help in the first place, now this? What did I do wrong?
House hunting tomorrow, any tips to help me out? I'm a college student moving into a house with a friend next year. Do you have any advice to give when looking for a rental house? What kinds of questions should I ask? Is it impolite to negotiate the rent with the landlord? Are there any traps we might get sucked into and taken advantage of? Any good advice would be much appreciated!!!
House hunting in London advice? Looking for a flat for 4 of us to rent... We really wanted this flat the other day, but they ended up giving it to someone else. Now we have a couple of leads for promising looking places in better locations.. but they don't come on the market for a few days. Now the guy says we can have the original one. It may not be the best... but flat hunting in London is a nightmarish cut throat business, would be nice to have it sorted.. dunno what to do.

What should we do? We have been house hunting with no luck...? We want a house with another bedroom as my two girls are 5 years apart in age. We would also like another toilet. We cant seem to find a house with what we want in our price range (which is a bit above average). There is always something wrong with it. The lastest seems too small and no backyard for the kids to play in. It is really starting to bother me. Any advice? Has anyone been through this?

How soon should you begin looking for a house to buy? Our family will be moving to Dallas, Texas from 29 Palms, California in July of 2008 and we are looking to purchase our first home. How early should we begin the house hunting process, locating a realtor, etc? Is a year much too early? Would 6 months out put us in a time crunch? We know we will be making at least two trips out to the area prior to our move next year we just don't know when yet.
How do I get My parents to move house? We live in this boring dead-beat village in surrey call cheam, in a small house, which is really yuck! My room is tiny, so tiny that only one person can fit in there! There is no space for any of my familie's stuff anywhere, the garden is really small. The area is sooo dull, no playground, skate park, shops, movie cinema, nothing but old people (no offence) but I'm a teenager and i need some space out side to skate and play soccer! My parents say that they are going to start house-hunting but they never do. So what can i do to get them to move? It's horrible here :-(.................. I'm Home-schooled. So i can't go on school trips and stuff.

The 1st Step In student house hunting at McMaster University? The Immediate answer is to rush to search the internet or such resources: find McMaster Student Houses for rental - Right? Buying a house that is on short sale? My family was house hunting and we saw this house that we would like to buy becuase it was such a deal. But the thing is, it's a home that is a short sale. From my understanding the bank hasn't even approve the selling price. Is buying a short sale even worth my time? The home as a mortgage balance of 550,000 and the listed price is 350,000 subject to lender to approve. What's the real deal with these short sales?

What cost should I expect ot pay out-of-pocket when buying a house? I'm doing research before I start my house hunt and would like to get a general idea of what costs I will incur that will be out-of-pocket. I will be rolling most of the mortgage costs (i.e. document fees, closing costs, etc) but my understanding is that I will pay for a house inspection/termite inspection. Are there any other fees I need to consider? Any help would be greatly appreciated!
House Hunting in Atlanta? I will be starting to look for my first house here in the Atlanta area hopefully around November/December. I'd like either a bungalow type house, or a condo/townhouse. I'd prefer to live in Cobb County, and was wondering if anyone had any ideas for me, or any websites where I could go look at listings for that area so I can get an idea on prices. Thanks so much!! :)
How do you think I did on my house deal ? I'm just looking for a few opinions on how I did on my house deal. I live in Milwaukee WI. My wife and I owned a 120year old house downtown that was falling down basically. The fair market value from the city tax assessor was 57,000.We sold it to an investor who owns most of the old neighborhood for 50,000. We house hunted for a few months, comparing different houses. We decided on a 3 bedroom 1.5 bath ranch on the NW side of the city.It was first listed at 145,900 then reduced to 134,900 then reduced to 129,900. The fair market value from the city tax assessor is 145,900. Zillow says its worth 161,000. Our Accepted offer is 122,500 with the owner paying 2500 to the closing costs. Keep in mind, we didn't have the giant run up on prices here. Things have stayed pretty level. So what do you think? (Thanks again to everyone who answered my questions these last few months.Your input really helped.) Oh ! yeah ! It is a one owner home who owned it from 1957. I got the fridge, oven, dishwasher, washer and dryer. All newer and in great shape(3yrs new). Basement is fully finished with a giant rec room and wet bar, workroom with benches and vises, and a washroom with laundry chute and a folding table and the above mentioned washer and dryer. The gentleman selling the house is a widower who has had to move to a nursing home. It does need a tub surround and some new shower hardware...and maybe even a new tub just to round things off. BUT, the roof is a complete tear off and rebuild (5yrs old) and it has a newer (3yrs) CARRIER furnace and AC unit...with a fenced yard to boot. The only other bad point is a 1.5 car garage and no other parking but on the street. I plan to build a 2.5 car garage which should only increase the value. Its also 3 blocks from a famous Frank Lloyd Wright landmark. The Greek Orthodox Church of Milwaukee. We are very Happy!
Is it ok to use more than 1 Realtor when house hunting? My wife and I are looking for houses in our area, but think we might be interested in another area a bit further away. Is it ok for us to a different agent show us the houses in the more distant area or should we give our current agent the oppurtunity to show us the homes out there as well? (Even if he might not be as familiar with the area?) We have received an inital list of homes from the first realtor but have not been to any to look at them yet. It has been several days of unreturned voicemails and emails. We were anxious to look so went to a realtor website and asked a question about a home we saw. That realtor responded immediately and asked for more information about what kind of homes we are interested in. It felt kind of wrong to just give her the information when someone else was presumably looking for us (if they would return a call.....) We are still trying to decide whether or not to give the second reator any information.
Why is it called house "hunting"? When we are looking to buy a car, we are car "shopping". But when we are looking to buy a house, it's called house "hunting". Not that it matters much, but does anyone know why?

House hunting in Barcelona? I am looking at possibly relocating to Barcelona, Spain. While I will be working in Barcelona, I would like to find a house with a descent size yard no more than 30 minutes outside the city. I would love to live close to a small village by the coast. (I know its a lot to ask for, but you should aim for the stars right?). I prefer something that needs to be fixed up. Any suggestions for what area could meet these requirements or any ideas what such a house could cost?
Can you take pictures at an open house? I'm going to start house hunting for my first home. I would like to take pictures of each home so I can review them later. Is that normal to do, or do I have to ask permission at every showing? To Amy: no, they don't - that's the problem. Most homes online (for my city anyway) have pics of the outside, but not the insides. I suppose it would be rude if the current owner still lived there, but most of these places are vacant.
Should houses "under contract" be ruled out when house hunting? I am looking to buy a house in Australia, Realestate.com.au is pretty good. When searching for a house, some of the results say that the house is "under contract/ under offer" Does this mean that i shouldn't even bother thinking about them? ... ie what happens if you make an offer? do they only consider it if the contract falls through.
can the roots of a tree wreck the foundation of a house? we've been house hunting lately, and may have found the perfect house. however, there are these 3 huge Baldcypress trees right on the side of the house. they are only about 2 feet away from the house. so we are worried if the roots of the trees could possbily cause damage to the foundation if the roots continue growing. what if it starts growing underneath the house, and then starts growing upward? help!!
UK only... I am house hunting... brrr...any advice? we want to buy a house and another 'buy to let property'. But we now wonder if we shouldn't rather buy a one nice property only. We are first time buyers. I thought maybe if we have 2 properties and it doesn't work after 2 years... we still have 2 separate properties to live in... any thoughts welcome...
